Gua Gelanggi, Pahang
The wondrous caves in Gua Gelanggi, Pahang, with their massive cave chambers and narrow passageways are a thrill for explorers. Tourists are mesmerized by the beauty and effortless preservation in the midst of the jungle. This archaeological site was only discovered in 2005. It was once located under the sea and the scallop edges on the soft limestone are still visible on the cave walls. It is reported as potentially the ancient capital of the empire of Srivijaya, one of the oldest kingdoms in South East Asia.
Niah Caves, Sarawak
The Niah Caves near Miri, Sarawak, is famous for a rare traditional health delicacy known as “bird’s nest”. The caves are filled with nests that are privately owned. The collectors have to skillfully climb hundreds of feet on a narrow ladder with a pole to the cave ceiling without proper lights. This is also a prehistorical site and the oldest recorded human settlement in East Malaysia. Human remains of 40,000 years old were discovered here. The Niah Caves are part of Niah National Park where visitors can also enjoy jungle walks and visit the Iban longhouses.


Mount Kinabalu, Sabah
Mount Kinabalu sits inside Kinabalu Park, Malaysia’s first world heritage site declared by UNESCO in December 2000. Kinabalu Park, with a cool temperature of 15 to 24℃ has more than 4,500 species of flora and fauna. There is a variety of accommodation from hostels to luxurious chalets. It takes two days to get to the top of Mount Kinabalu, Malaysia’s highest mountain. Climbers need to be fit and accompanied by park guides. Camping can be done at Poring Hot Springs, which is in the middle of the tropical rainforest. Bird and wildlife watching are popular activities at the park.
